TOYO HISTORY – Tire fundamentals

Background

The vision to manufacture great tires began in August of 1945, when founding president, Rikimatsu Tomihisa, established the Toyo Tire & Rubber Co, Ltd.

Mr. Tomihisa and his team began exporting truck tires in 1947 and Toyo opened its first plant in Itami, Japan in 1953. Today, Toyo has development, manufacturing, testing, distribution, and marketing operations spanning ten countries. Our award winning tire portfolio covers a range of applications – from our high-performance, racing-inspired Proxes line, to our proven Open Country Truck and SUV Tires.

Over the years, Toyo has pioneered the development of vehicle-specific tires and ultra high-performance sport radials. Advanced polymer technology played a role in these breakthroughs, but they were also made possible by Toyo’s proprietary virtual testing systems.

T-MODE, Toyo’s latest form of this technology, uses computer simulation to virtually test vehicle-mounted tires in an array of driving conditions. Uneven tread wear, noise generation and a series of other factors are also analyzed. This data is then used to optimize tire design and enhance performance.

Our manufacturing operations include a new, nearly 1 million square foot, state-of the art facility in Bartow County, Georgia, established in 2004 by Toyo Tire North America, Incorporated.

With an initial investment of over 180 million dollars, the Georgia factory boasts Toyo Tires’ latest A.T.O.M. technology. A.T.O.M is an automated tire manufacturing system that can produce significant gains in product consistency, quality, uniformity, and line flexibility. These advancements will help support product value and profitability, as well as reduce lead times and dealer inventory costs.
